Ten Year Festival in Village (21 images)
In November 2005 our village joined the other five villages in our area to hold their “ten year festival” or Dajiao. The Dajiao is a religious festival steeped in Daoist (Taoist) beliefs mixed with many traditional Chinese superstitions. The main purpose of the festival is to cleanse the area of any disgruntled or dangerous spirits or “hungry ghosts” as they are called – a spirit with no family to care for him becomes a “hungry” or an “angry” ghost and can cause problems – and to renew community ties with the gods so that peace and harmony can be restored.
